- Class Description:
- This seminar will examine linguistic ideas from various times and places, not with the goal of achieving a complete survey, but rather from the perspective of generative linguistics with the goal of "an art lover" who looks at history "to find in it things that are of particular value and that obtain part of their value" (Chomsky, 1971). In other words, the goal will be to identify past ideas that bear on modern thinking, and try to understand them in ways that illuminate modern thinking. We will start by situating generative grammar amid recent conflicts between behaviorist/empiricist and mentalist/rationalist ideas, then delve into such past linguistics idea as those of Panini and his successors, the Port-Royal grammarians, Saussure and the structuralists, and so on.
