Class Description:
This course is for the student who has completed Spanish 1001 at the University of Minnesota. Upon entering this course, the student should know basic vocabulary and present and past tense forms. Spanish is spoken almost exclusively in class. Spanish 1002 continues to focus on the development of communicative skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. One day a week students watch "Destinos", an educational televison program in Spanish. The text and workbook are designed to be studied outside class. The readings in the text have been taken from Spanish language newspapers and magazines. Grammar is covered in the homework assignments and reinforced in class with a variety of paired and small group activities. Since the majority of class time is devoted to speaking and listening, class attendance is critical.
Grading:
Other Grading Information: 29% Homework, 10% Compositions, 30% Exams and Quizzes, 10% Partnered Exchanges, 5% Tarea Participation, 15% Final Exam, 1% Oral Presentation.
Exam Format:
All quizzes and tests evaluate listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar and writing. A minimum of multiple choice & true-false items; an effort is made to encourage the use of natural language by using short answers and essays. 2 partnered exchanges

Class Description:
This course is the second half of the year-long course that begins with Spanish 1001. Enrollment is restricted to students who have completed Spanish 1001 at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Upon entering this course, students will have covered chapters 1-10 of the textbook, "Gente, tercera edicion? and will have a strong grasp of the present tense as well as an acquaintance with the past tense and the cultures of nine Spanish-speaking countries. A permission number is required for this course, which is available from the course supervisor. Spanish 1002 continues the task-based, content-based, communicative approach to language learning and teaching. The course is taught mostly in Spanish. It focuses on the students? development of interpersonal speaking and listening skills, interpretive reading and listening skills, and presentational speaking and writing skills while working on an introduction to the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. We will cover chapters 11-19 of the textbook, "Gente, tercera edicion,? as well as the accompanying exercises in MySpanishLab and the two video programs: Gente en Accion and Vistas Culturales. Most of class time is spent working in pairs and small groups on a variety of activities. Since the majority of class time is devoted to speaking and listening in Spanish, class attendance is critical
