Class Description:
The Islamic world played a fundamental role in the transfer of the knowledge of the ancients, especially the thought of Plato and Aristotle, to the West. This course examines ancient western thought and traces its further development in the works of Ibn SIna, Ibn Rushd, St. Aquinas, and Martin Luther. The course shows how the treatment of philosophy by both Islamic and western scholars resulted in a divide that has plagued the Islamic world and the West, including the United States. The course also examines the activities of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Taliban, al-Qaeda, and Daesh (ISIS) in the context of the dynamics of the clash between faith and reason.
