Course Catalog Description:
How Asian states, societies, economies, cultures linked with one another/European powers. Historical effects. Covers India, China, Japan, Korea, Indochina.
Class Description:
This course examines the history of East Asia from 1600 to the present. It examines the individual histories of countries in the region (China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam) as well as their connections with one another and their roles in an increasingly interconnected world. Questions of national, regional, local, and personal identity will be examined in lecture, and through discussion of readings and objects of material culture. As the title of the course implies, the course will be interested in the changing political scenarios and the different ways in which individuals are located in those political scenarios. As the semester progresses the subject matter of the course will become more thematically integrated. The class will discuss topics raised in the readings such as gender, ethnicity, religion, nationalism and so on. In addition we will make use of the abundant resources at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the James Ford Bell Library, and the Weisman Art Museum to explore aspects of the material culture of East Asia during this period. There will be two lectures and one discussion section per week. Students will be required to post questions and comments on the reading on the course moodle site regularly. There will be a take-home midterm and a final short paper (5-7 pages) on one of the memoirs we read in class.
