- A broad survey of the culture and history of Rome from its origins to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire in the third and fourth centuries A.D.

- This course provides a general introduction to the broad sweep of Roman history, from the emergence of their civilization, through the growth and conquest of an enormous (and remarkably stable) empire, to the break-up and transformation of the western empire in the fourth century of our era. We will look at the cultural underpinnings of Roman power as well as its inner workings in order to get some sense of what it meant to live under Roman rule.
