Literary investigation of the greatest works of medieval German poetry. Readings in English. Majors will be required to write a paper with use of secondary sources in English and German. prereq: No knowledge of German required

Class Description:
The earliest texts in German go back to the 8th century, but the main works of the medieval period were written in the 13th century. Three of them (The Lay of the Nibelungen, Tristan, and Parzival) will be discussed in detail. However, the lyric poetry of the Middle High German period will also be covered.
