Course Catalog Description:
Changing conceptions of nature, culture, and environment in Western social/political thought. How our understanding of humans/nonhumans has been transformed by scientific and technological practices. Interdisciplinary, reading intensive. prereq: Jr or sr
Class Description:
How do we understand nature in an age of climate change, biotechnology, and advanced capitalism? What do we mean by the Anthropocene and how does it challenge our understanding of humanity as a species? And how did we arrive at this peculiar juncture where all of life now seems to hang in the balance? This course explores how we think about the relation between humans and the nonhuman world, and how these ideas are reflected in, or emerge from, environmental practices. The course will draw from a diverse literature, including science and technology studies, environmental philosophy, Marxist political economy, and feminist theory in order to develop theoretical and analytical tools for investigating our entangled existence with nonhuman others. In the process, students will be challenged to think critically about knowledge formation, the construction of environmental imaginaries, the emergence of eco-movements, and the ideological frameworks and social conditions that inform them. Students should expect to take part regularly in class discussions.
