Course Catalog Description:
Cinematic portrayal of changes in 20th-century cities worldwide including social and cultural conflict, political and economic processes, changing gender relationships, rural versus urban areas, and population and development issues (especially as they affect women and children).
Class Description:

Learn how films attempt to capture and represent the urban experience. Through lecture, film viewings, and discussion, we will study how the language of film (e.g. editing, sound, cinematography, etc.) and different film genres (e.g. mysteries, action/suspense, comedy, documentary) work together to reflect back to us diverse meanings and experiences concerning city life.

Grading:
80% Reports/Papers
20% Class Participation
Exam Format:
No exams. Although there may be an occasional pop quiz.
Class Format:
Main Section of the course will consist of lecture given by Prof Henderson, followed by feature length film. Required discussion sections will be lead by T.A.
Workload:
Apart from attending lecture, film showing, and discussion section, course workload consists of about 40 pages of reading per week and 3 six-page papers.
