Course Catalog Description:: Cinemas of the Maghreb, the northern African nations of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Themes may include North African cities/communities; gender, class and ethnicity; and impact of globalization in migratory patterns. Films. Readings in philosophy, history, sociology, anthropology, and cultural critique. prereq: 3101

Class Description:: In this course, we will examine filmic representations of contemporary clandestine migrations across the Mediterranean Sea. We will focus primarily on South to North journeys but will also look at works that present the reverse scenario with France as a point of departure and the Maghreb as a destination for Western clandestine migrants. In addition, we will explore documentaries about the current refugee crisis in the Middle East. Our analyses will be informed by readings in philosophy, literature, sociology and cultural critique. The films we will study include Yasmine Kassiri's L'Enfant endormi, Leïla Kilani's Tanger, le rêve des brûleurs, Jonathan Millet and Loïc H. Rechi's Ceuta, douce prison, Djamel Bensalah's Il était une fois dans l'oued, Mohsen Melliti's Io, l'altro and Chus Guttiérez's Return to Hansala. The course will be conducted in French.
