Course Catalog Description:
This course, taught in English by a member of the Department's regular faculty, will introduce students to French and Francophone Studies today. The course has no prerequisites. Students who have already completed French 1004 or equivalent may not register for 1501; they must register for 1502. The course has several components. To learn about the historical breadth of French culture and the way it informs cultural and political topics today, students will read at least one significant, complete text from the period before the French Revolution and one from the period after it, discussing them in small groups. An ongoing series of guest presentations throughout the semester will introduce students to the various fields of French and Francophone Studies and the faculty in the Department. In addition, students will participate in two major activities: a "Reacting to the Past" role-playing game set during the French Revolution, and an "Encountering the Present" activity in which they will gather oral histories of French-speaking immigrants.

Class Description:
Prerequisites: no prereqs for 1501 (all work in English) French 1004 or LPE for 1502 (some reading/writing in French)

Why did the French Revolution happen? Can a revolution start in a theater? Where did we get the idea of "human rights"?

Where did the Francophone community in the Twin Cities come from, and why? When did the idea of labor unions start?

What do people study in the Program in French and Francophone Studies?

This class, taught in English, will answer these questions and inspire many more. You will discuss a play and two novels in small groups, engage in a role-playing game set during the French Revolution, and collect oral histories to understand the immigration of Francophones to the Twin Cities. You will also hear presentations from all members of the French faculty about what they study.

You can take French 1501/1502 as a freestanding class or at the same time as a language class (French 1001 - 1004 or 3015 - 3016, depending on your level).

The class will be required for new majors and minors in French Studies, starting fall 2016, but you can take it even if you don't think you want to major or minor, or haven't yet made up your mind!
