Course Catalog Description:: Examine issues related to reading and understanding narrative in a variety of interpretive contexts. Topics may include "The 19th-century English (American, Anglophone) Novel," "Introduction to Narrative," or "Techniques of the Novel." Topics specified in the Class Schedule

Class Description:: For centuries, novels have been obsessed with love and the many ways it can go awry. We will use this theme to examine the relation between love and power, violence, language, domesticity, and personhood. We will also ask why this theme has been central to the genre and consider how it promotes formal innovation. Readings will range from Aphra Behn's Oroonoko through Richardson's Pamela and Austen's Emma, to Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway and McEwan's Enduring Love.
