Class Description:
This course will address some of the myths around Anne Frank's person and her diary. Her symbolic status as a holocaust victim as well as an object of identification will be examined in the context of her ethnic heritage, the historical circumstances under which she came to the Netherlands, the particularity of her hiding situation and the critical acclaim of her journal, including its adaptations for marketing and commercialization purposes. Students will read and understand the iconic text against the backdrop of the Dutch unique position within Europe in the Second World War as a nation under a civil, not a military administration during the Nazi occupation. Notions of Dutch heroism and sacrifice will be scrutinized to uncover the blurry line between good and evil, right and wrong. From the perspective of the history of Jewish life in the Netherlands, the rise of antisemitism and the German instrumentalization of the Dutch bureaucracy for the purpose of persecution and deportation, Anne Frank will emerge as a particular case of victimization, one of many, and not as the universal example with sainthood status that she has become over time. To look at her from this perspective, however, will by no means undermine or devalue the legacy of her optimism and humanism for our world of today.
