Class Description:: Course Description: This course will focus on the political economy of the dancing body and its role in the representation of nation-states through global tourism. Primarily looking at (but not limited to) Asia, Africa and the Middle East, we will examine dance and its relationship to belonging, nationalism, and the politics of art and tradition. We will analyze the ways in which international tourism and collaborative intercultural projects provide dancers with mobility and different possibilities of agency, while also simultaneously limiting their creative and political expression through an enforced allegiance with nationalist agendas.
