- CSCL 1401W Reading Literature: Theory and Practice 4 credits, meets Lib Ed req of Literature Core; meets Lib Ed req of Writing Intensive Instructor: STAFF Description: What is Literature? How do definitions of it differ over time and across cultures? How does literature play a role in the ways people see themselves and others? How do our histories - personal and cultural - determine how we read it? CSCL 1401W examines such questions in relation to larger patterns of culture and power. You'll emerge from the course with a solid sense of the differences among various genres, and the cultural contexts from which they arise - between an epic poem emerging from a Greek city state and a novel by a German civil servant, say. Small classes emphasize close reading, discussion, and practice in critical writing. An introductory course in every sense, it will give you a good sense of the field of Comparative Literature as well as reading and writing skills useful in many other courses and disciplines. Class Time: 40% lecture, 60% discussion

- CSCL 1401W Reading Literature: Theory and Practice 4 credits, meets Lib Ed req of Literature Core; meets Lib Ed req of Writing Intensive Instructor: Emily Fedoruk Description Selfish: Afterlives of the Author in the 21st Century Borrowing its title from two texts on our syllabus, our class will consider the role of the author in contemporary comparative literature, and indeed, daily life. We will follow French literary theorist Roland Barthes' famous essay, "The Death of the Author," into a study of the social production of literature in a global context--examining its "afterlives" nearly fifty years after this essay's publication. Widening our view to consider changing positions of authors now, we can look to celebrity Kim Kardashian West's Selfish, a book that demands we take seriously the significance of gender within the possibilities for reading and writing today. We engage feminism and Marxism as central theoretical modes to think through each text as a unique sociocultural process. The course objective will be to better understand our position as readers who actively make meaning in what we read, and to realize how authors themselves are created by this relationship. Our small class size allows us ample opportunity for discussion and participation, really getting up close to each text while working on our skills as writers and critical thinkers.
