Class Description:
This course will address the general topic of war and war films with a specific focus on the British experience during World War II. The abroad segment will be based in London, with excursions to other sites related to specific films and topics. The course will go beyond a series of visits to sites shown in movies because the sites to be visited are not simply film locations but offer special educational opportunities and their own particular perspectives on history. Therefore visiting these sites will enable the class to engage questions of historical representation not only in cinema, historical writing, literature, and art, but also in relation to museum display. After preliminary work during the beginning of the semester to address the general topic of war, the more specialized topic of war and cinema, and the particular focus on Britain in World War II and the cinema, the abroad portion of the course will shift to London, and feature visits to these sites, all of which have education departments, and tours (e.g., The Imperial War Museum in London). This course involves a study abroad component to England during Spring Break 2017. CLASS NOTE: Please note that you must also apply for this seminar through the Learning Abroad Center.
