Course Catalog Description:: Survey of Chinese cinema from China (PRC), Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Emphasizes discussion/comparison of global, social, economic, sexual, gender, psychological, and other themes as represented through film.
Class Notes:: Evening film screenings every Tuesday 6:00pm-9:00pm.
Class Description:: The course will place these filmic texts in the sociocultural and historical contexts in which they were created and examine their relationship to ongoing cultural production in greater China over the past century. It is anticipated that through studying film in this way, students in this class will acquire a working knowledge of a range of key issues in Chinese society over the last century--a period that has seen multiple transformations in nearly every area of life from politics and economics, to culture, art, and ideology.
