- Course Description Information technology (IT) enabled by computers, software and communication technologies have fundamentally changed how businesses function. Understanding the basic concepts and roles of IT and the challenges is an inherent part of every manager's core competence. This class is designed to cover a broad range of topics which a manager should know about the field of IT from the organizational and decision making points of view. The course consists of two aspects: The first aspect, classroom learning, covers the fundamental concepts, frameworks and methodologies that are necessary for understanding the interactions between technology, organization and management. The second aspect is the student learning through, reading and group activities inside and outside the classroom. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, the student should have acquired the core knowledge and skills to be able to: ? Understand the basic concepts and components of IT. ? Describe major types of enterprise and functional IT, along with the associated challenges related to the adoption and implementation of those systems. ? Evaluate the tradeoffs and relevance of emerging technologies to a particular organization and business function. ? Understand the basic approaches and techniques for developing, assessing, implementing and for the business impact of IT. ? Work effectively on a team to successfully complete group assignments. Course Materials IDSC 3001 wiki web site (note: no textbook or course packet to purchase). Teaching notes and other materials will be posted on the course wiki website. You will gain access to the course wiki during the first week of class. Webct will also be used for administrative purposes to support the course.
