Course Catalog Description:
How Black Studies evolved to become Africana Studies in 1960s and an academic field in major universities. How Africana Studies became a discipline that encompassed both Africa and Africans in Diaspora [African American Studies].
Class Description:
This course will introduce students to the modern political history of the Horn of Africa and examine the nature of conflict and peace in Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. The specific themes that will be covered include post-colonization independence, reoccurring and systematic conflict, humanitarian crises, foreign aid, development and peacemaking.
Grading:
20% Midterm Exam
45% Final Exam
20% Written Homework
10% Attendance
5% In-class Presentations
Exam Format:
Exams will not be required. The mid-term and final grades will be based on research papers.
