Class Description:
Sec 001 -Homelessness: On any given night in Los Angeles County approximately 82,000 people are homeless. That equates to over 20% of Minneapolis' population living on the streets, in a homeless shelter, or wherever one can find a place to sleep tonight. These 82,000 people represent only a snapshot into the issue of homelessness in this country, and while an extreme example, it does illustrate the magnitude of the problem. Of these 82, 000 people, many have jobs, many are mentally or physically ill, many are children and teens; some want to be homeless, while others feel they have no option but to be homeless. The face of homelessness is one of diversity and complexity. This colloquium will address this diversity of issues associated with homelessness and examine the urban context within which this issue generally takes place. This class will consist of weekly readings and student and professor led discussions. Mark Brinda has a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Minnesota and is the Director of the Minneapolis Neighborhood Employment Network.
