Mexican Cinema: Issues in Race, Violence, Indigenous communities, and Gender This course examines the representation of race, violence, language diversity and gender in contemporary Mexican cinema. Engaging with the most up-to-date trends of philosophical and methodological tools, students will explore a selection comprised of fiction, documentary, and Indigenous community-directed films that confront social inequality, femicide, narco-violence, economic oppression, and current political community movements of emancipation.

The Films of Pedro Almodovar In this course, we will study the films of contemporary Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. We will trace the evolution of his filmic production, analyzing recurrent themes and cinematic strategies as well as changes in style and topics, from the beginning of his career in the "Movida Madrile?a" in the early 1980's up to today.

We will study a selection of twelve films, including Abre los ojos (Spain), El aura (Argentina), La cara oculta (Colombia), and Nicotina (Mexico). This course provides the necessary skills to read cinematic texts and includes readings in psychology, horror theory, and the suspense film genre. Class Description:
TOPIC TITLE for SPRING 2015 with Salvador Raggio: Transgression and Urban Anxiety in Hispanic Film -- DESCRIPTION: Metropolitan Passengers will familiarize students with the aesthetics, conditions of production, and history of film in Latin America and Spain, enabling students to pursue an understanding of cinema within the context of a wider knowledge of urban Hispanic culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. We will study a selection of twelve films, including 25 watts (Uruguay), La pistola de mi hermano (Spain), Medianeras (Argentina), No se lo digas a nadie (Peru), and Perras (Mexico). Themes of social transgression (antisocial behavior, non-normative subcultures, villainy) and postmodern urban anxiety (how contemporary city life affects romantic relationships, traditional nuclear families, and sexuality) will be our primary focus.

Class Description:
FALL 2014 TOPIC TITLE: SOUND AND VISION, HISPANIC FILM AESTHETICS AND ANALYSIS DESCRIPTION: Sound and Vision introduces the student to various genres of narrative film in the Hispanic world (avant-garde, black comedy, drama, western, queer, psychological thriller, horror, melodrama) as well as to different cinematic styles. Although Sound and Vision examines the historical and social specificity of visual texts produced in Spain and Latin America, this course also presents a view of cinema as a transnational artistic practice, focusing on formal analysis of the aesthetic and ideological elements that comprise the multiple languages of film, and providing, at the same time, the basic skills necessary to read visual texts. For Fall 2013: TOPIC TITLE: Women and Film in Latin America. DESCRIPTION: La reciente explosion de cine de mujeres en America Latina durante las ultimas decadas invita a reflexionar acerca de la relacion entre las mujeres y el cine en los paises latinoamericanos. Esta participacion dentro de un medio considerado por decadas como un dominio exclusivamente masculino comienza durante los ochenta con la segunda ola del nuevo cine latinoamericano, momento en el cual comienza redefinirse el cine a partir del enfasis en la diferencia. Las mujeres directoras empiezan a articular nuevas visiones no solo respecto de las imagenes narrativas sino ademas respecto de las alegorias nacionales y las narrativas patriarcales que acompa?aron los modos de narrar las naciones y que caracterizaron la primera ola del nuevo cine latinoamericano. En este curso, analizaremos como y en que diversas formas el cine de mujeres subvierte no solo la representacion del genero sexual, sino tambien de las formas de acercarse a la estetica, a los medios, a la politica, a la memoria, a la historia y a la ciudadania. Consideraremos a las mujeres como sujetos historicos y politicos pero tambien pondremos atencion en las diferencias y los conflictos entre las mujeres mismas y sus posiciones feministas.

Class Description:
The Films of Pedro Almodovar In this course, we will study the films of contemporary Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. We will trace the evolution of his filmic production, analyzing recurrent themes and cinematic strategies as well as changes in style and topics, from the beginning of his career in the "Movida Madrile?a" in the early 1980's up to today.

Other Grading Information: Students will have to write a research paper on one of Almodovar's movies.
