Class Notes:
rom the 1970's to the first decade of the XXI century, Latin America was a ferment of social transitions and artistic negotiations. From Mexico to Perú to the Southern Cone, popular culture played a significant role in the social revolutions that took place in the late sixties and early seventies, while in the 80s and 90s, mass-media and popular culture became contested territory between the countries' dictatorships and a disperse resistance movement operating through film, literature, rock music, comic strips and ritualized protests. Whereas the status quo (canonical discourse) supported questionable policies against artistic manifestations and tried to silence popular culture manifestations, theater groups, filmmakers, musicians, grassroots women's organizations, indigenous internal migrants, gender-oriented associations, displaced Afro Latin Americans citizens, shantytown dwellers, etc. came to openly challenge authoritarian regimes' lack of accountability. Street theater performers; shantytown rock-and-roll groups; stand-up comedians; 'canta-autores' (folk composers and singers); indigenous literary writers; Quechua, Aymara poets; Black dancing performers; all-women synchronized public performers; etc. generated powerful artistic narratives that explored at the same time the continent shift towards economic privatization, commercialism and postmodernism with its de-centering of subjectivity, collapse of artistic hierarchy, and its fundamental distrust towards totalizing truths. In this course we will explore the popular artwork created in this de-stabilized milieu and how it sought to counter the dominant discourses of the regimes in which it emerged.

Class Description:
TOPIC TITLE: HUMAN RIGHTS. During the last decades of the XX Century and the first years of the XXI century, discourses on global studies, the postmodern condition, and human rights increasingly became some of the most debated and controversial issues within Latin American discourses such as political, economic and cultural studies. And yet, this hermeneutical approach did not resolve many tensions and contradictions embodied in various discourse contexts introduced by postmodernist thinkers, fiction writers and playwrights. By way of in-depth analysis and constant reflection, this course will attempt to explore recent theoretical works on the politics of globalism, human rights, gender, performance and cultural issues, in a manner that will move beyond traditional and simplistic interpretations of nationalistic and/or critical discourses. Although, the realistic narratives of an informational society allude to the popular cultures of contemporary Latin America as lived in its cities, shantytowns and suburbs, its gritty, hard-boiled depictions of poverty and crime prefer to examine a society heavily influenced by pervasive economic practices generated by a globalization movement, interested in increasing social class differences, and class struggle. Until recently much of the intellectual discussion on global studies influence, overlooked the counter movement tendency experienced by recent writing while adopting anthropological and axiological approaches moving beyond reified notions of 'culture', heavily influenced by global conceptualizations of power. Based on recent theoretical works on literary theory, drama, music, and human rights theory this course will attempt to come to a more nuanced understanding of the politics of globalism, and of the discussion of the limits of global discourses within various political discourses where Latin American Human Rights have become central to their definitions.

Class Description:
SPRING 2014 with Prof. Raul Marrero-Fente, TOPIC: Global Spanish Imperialism in the 16th-century, COURSE DESCRIPTION: Through an interdisciplinary approach, this course aims to provide a new interpretation of Spanish imperialism during the 16th-century. The course, will examine the legacies of imperialist discourse as producer of the epistemic colonial difference. Furthermore, this course not only identifies the global nature of Spanish imperialism, but also analyses the indigenous accounts of resistance to the conquest and colonization. By focusing on the cultural production and practices of Spanish imperialism in Africa, the Americas, and Asia, the course argue that Colonial Latin American cannot be understood in isolation from other geographical regions, and from the transatlantic and global exchange from which it emerged. In other words, the cultural, economic, legal, political, and social interaction that occurred between the colonial territories was crucial in shaping the Spanish empire in the early modern world. The course provides training in analytical thinking and cultural critique of imperialism and colonialism, bringing a global perspective to our curriculum. The course will focus on critical readings and discussion of cultural artifacts, maps, texts and documents of Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Spain. Studies will include material pertaining to the aural and visual production of the period, including European accounts of the conquest, and indigenous accounts of resistance to the conquest. Primary reading materials are in Spanish and critical readings are in English, and Spanish.

We will explore how aspects of medieval Iberia such as the Muslim presence, the coexistence of Jews, Muslims and Christians, as well as the relative strength of non-Castilian cultures on the Peninsula became factors in the emergence of what we think of as early modern Spain.

Class Description:
TOPIC TITLE for SPRING 2015 with Luis Anchondo: Metaphysics & Writing during 20th c. Latin America -- DESCRIPTION: This course will introduce students to four of the most important writers of 20th century Latin America whose prose and poetry revolutionized the old literary canons of the day by using a wide range of narrative resources that situate the reader inside their literary works as another character of the plot. As the reader becomes "active" inside the story, he will get lost between what he thinks is reality and the reality that according to these writers exists beyond our senses. The course will also serve as an introduction to philosophy by which we are going to analyze, understand, and explore the main works of these intellectuals that will change our beliefs and thoughts about the perceptible world.

Fall 2014: SPAN 3510 Issues in Hispanic Cultures. Tuesday and Thursday 8:15 to 9:30 am TOPIC TITLE: CONTEMPORARY SPAIN AND THE CHALLENGES OF IMMIGRATION DESCRIPTION: What motivates people to leave their country of birth? Who decides which people have the right to live in which countries? How does it feel to be a newcomer? What economic and social struggles do immigrants face? What obligation does a country have to its newest residents? Who gets to stay and who must leave? What leads to acceptance of or resistance to increased cultural diversity? In this course we address these questions in the context of the changes that have occurred in Spain over the past one hundred years as it moved from being a country of emigrants, to being a destination for many people from around the world, to once again being a net exporter of human capital. The Spanish case will allow students to understand a host of issues common to human migration around the world.

Class Description:
Summer 2014 DESCRIPTION: During the last decades of the XX Century and the first years of the XXI century, discourses on global studies, the postmodern condition, and human rights increasingly became some of the most debated and controversial issues within Latin American discourses such as political, economic and cultiural studies. And yet, this hermeneutical approach did not resolve many tensions and contradictions embodied in various discourse contexts introduced by postmodernist thinkers, fiction writers and playwrights. By way of in-depth analysis and constant reflexion, this course will attempt to explore recent theoretical works on the politics of globalism, human rights, gender and cultural issues, in a manner that will move beyond traditional and simplistic interpretations of nationalistic and/or critical discourses.

For FALL 2013: TOPIC: Art and Politics of Twentieth Century Spain. DESCRIPTION: This course addresses the interconnection between politics and cultural life. Focusing on the changes in the visual arts that occurred in Twentieth Century Spain, we will analyze the impact that the political environment has on creative work and the impact that creative work has on social values and politics. To explore different ways that art and politics intersect, the course will be divided into four historical periods that occurred in Spain over the past century: the instability that governed the first third of the century; the unexpected Second Republic that dissolved into civil war; Franco's forty-year dictatorship; and the establishment of a democracy. Key cultural manifestations within each period will be identified. Emphasis is on painting and sculpture including the works of Nonell, Picasso, Julio Gonzalez, Miro, Alberto, Saura, Equipo Cronica, Chillida, Gordillo, Miquel Navarro and Barcelo. Lectures, reading, written assignments, students? presentation and other work in the course are all in Spanish
