Prerequisite: Japanese 1012 (5 credits). This course is the first of a two-semester sequence of Intermediate Japanese; it is for students who have taken Jpn1012 or have passed the placement test. The course aims to develop the four communication skills (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) on the intermediate level as well as culture-specific skills (do's and don'ts). Topics covered in this semester include job interviews, finding a lost article, giving advice, etc. The course consists of 3 hours of discussion sessions and 2 hours of lecture sessions per week. Class performance in the discussion session accounts for a large part of the course grade. For each class, students are expected to spend 2 hours per day doing homework and practicing with CDs. Class Notes:
Intensive Japanese -- concurrent registration in JPN 3022 is REQUIRED. Students not registered for both JPN 3021 and JPN 3022 for summer session will be automatically dropped. Students who want to register for only one course must request special permission from the instructor. This is a hybrid flexible synchronous class. Students can choose either an online or in-person format, meeting at the same time, at scheduled days and times.
Class Description:
Prerequisite: Japanese 1012 (5 credits). This course is the first of a two-semester sequence of Intermediate Japanese; it is for students who have taken Jpn1012 or have passed the placement test. The course aims to develop the four communication skills (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) on the intermediate level as well as culture-specific skills (do's and don'ts). Topics covered in this semester include job interviews, finding a lost article, giving advice, etc. The course consists of 3 hours of discussion sessions and 2 hours of lecture sessions per week. Class performance in the discussion session accounts for a large part of the course grade. For each class, students are expected to spend 2 hours per day doing homework and practicing with CDs. The course aims to develop the four communication skills (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) on the intermediate level as well as culture-specific skills (do's and don'ts). Topics covered in this semester include job interviews, finding a lost article, giving advice, etc. The course consists of 3 hours of discussion sessions and 2 hours of lecture sessions per week. Class Description:
Prerequisite: Japanese 1012 (5 credits). This course is the first of a two-semester sequence of Intermediate Japanese; it is for students who have taken Jpn1012 or have passed the placement test. The course aims to develop the four communication skills (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) on the intermediate level as well as culture-specific skills (do's and don'ts). Topics covered in this semester include job interviews, finding a lost article, giving advice, etc. The course consists of 3 hours of discussion sessions and 2 hours of lecture sessions per week. Class performance in the discussion session accounts for a large part of the course grade. For each class, students are expected to spend 2 hours per day doing homework and practicing with CDs. Textbook: Banno. et al. (1999). Genki: An integrated course in elementary Japanese, Vol. 2. For the placement test information, refer to the homepage of the Japanese language program.

This course is the first of a two-semester sequence of Intermediate Japanese. The course will cover Lessons 13 through 17 of GENKI (the edition published in September, 2011). It is divided into three types of classes: Lectures; Discussions (Speaking practice sessions); Reading discussions. Students are expected to express what they know and/or what they think in new words and grammatical structures. The course aims to develop the four communication skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) on the intermediate level, as well as culture-specific skills (do's and don'ts). The items that will be covered in this term include, but are not limited to: (1) Telling what you can or cannot do; (2) Describing gift giving/receiving situations; (3) Consulting; (4) Explaining things in detail; (5) Making a request in a polite manner. It is expected that, by the end of this semester, students will be able to use the above functions for a job-interview, a request for the extension of a deadline, and so on. Students will also be able to read and write an expository essay. Seventy-nine kanji characters will be introduced, in addition to 145 characters learned in the previous lessons. Intermediate speaking, reading, and writing in Japanese.
Class Description:
This course is the first of a two-semester sequence of Intermediate Japanese. The course will cover Lessons 13 through 17 of GENKI (the edition published in September, 2011), both sections of dialogue/grammar and of reading/writing. The course aims to develop the four communication skills (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) at an intermediate level as well as culture-specific skills (do's and don'ts). The items that will be covered in this semester include but are not limited to: 1. Telling what you can or cannot do, 2. Consulting, 3. Explaining things in detail, and 4. Making a request in a polite manner. It is expected that, by the end of this semester, students will be able to use the above functions for a job-interview, a request for the extension of a deadline, and so on. Students also will be able to read and write an expository essay. Seventy-nine kanji characters will be introduced, in addition to 145 characters learned in the previous lessons. PREREQUISITE: JPN1012/4002 You are required to take a placement test if: (1) your grade for JPN1012/4002 at the University of Minnesota was neither a C- or better, nor an S, or (2) you completed JPN1012/4002 at the University of Minnesota in or before 2010. The placement test will be given before the fall semester of 2012 begins. Class Description:
Prerequisite: Japanese 1012 (5 credits). This course is the first of a two-semester sequence of Intermediate Japanese; it is for students who have taken Jpn1012 or have passed the placement test. The course aims to develop the four communication skills (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) on the intermediate level as well as culture-specific skills (do's and don'ts). Topics covered in this semester include job interviews, finding a lost article, giving advice, etc. The course consists of 3 hours of discussion sessions and 2 hours of lecture sessions per week. Class performance in the discussion session accounts for a large part of the course grade. For each class, students are expected to spend 2 hours per day doing homework and practicing with CDs. Textbook: Banno. et al. (1999). Genki: An integrated course in elementary Japanese, Vol. 2. For the placement test information, refer to the homepage of the Japanese language program.
