- Class Description:
- This innovative course uses the themes of "authority" and "rebellion" to explore American history from the early colonial period through the Civil War. It offers a four-credit writing-intensive investigation of three tumultuous centuries of conflict and change. How did people envision and struggle for a "new world order" ? Whose hopes were realized, and whose were thwarted? Lectures and discussion sections are organized around significant themes such as the role of religion and challenges to religious authority, the transition to capitalism; native peoples' negotiation of the European presence, the meanings of ?liberty? over time, and the ongoing existence of slavery in American life. Lectures and readings focus on close examination of crucial episodes that illuminate these themes. Throughout, we will situate our analysis in the global context from which the United States emerged. We will examine how historians use evidence to produce knowledge about the past, and we will explore the value and the limitations of historical sources. Students will write short essays (3-4 pages) on a number of the themes, one short research paper, and take periodic quizzes on the course materials.
