Class Description:
The first part of this course will be devoted to reading foundational essays in feminist film theory. In lecture and discussion we'll look at film clips, mostly from Hollywood productions, that illustrate the ideas presented in the articles. We will go on to read work by later theorists as a way to think about non-narrative and experimental film by women directors, questions of race and sexuality, and film made outside the US. In this section of the class, we will focus more closely on the film texts themselves, and we will screen films in their entirety.

Class Description:
Abjection connotes humiliation, rejection, even degeneracy and perversion. In cinema, abjection is typically associated with excessively sexual, exploitative, and violent imagery, often of a horrific, supernatural or absurd nature. In critical discourse, the abject symbolizes the state of marginalized populations, in particular those marked by gender, race, class, sex, and bodily non-normativity. This course will proceed by examining films that manipulate themes and tropes of abjection across cinematic genres to animate the experience of difference and/or the larger cultural anxieties engendered by or inscribed upon marginalized bodies. While many of these films present unrealistic settings, storylines, and characters, they nevertheless comment critically on very real sociopolitics and are at times characterized by a commitment to social justice and strong cultural critique. Through the lens of intersectional feminism, we will unpack how abject representations of gender, race, class, sex, and corporeality emerge as part of a critical discourse on power and a politics of difference. Films we will likely consider include: D'jango Unchained; District 9; Machete; The Rocky Horror Picture Show; Alien; Foxy Brown; Cleopatra Jones; Kill Bill; The Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Spider Baby; Teeth; Black Snake Moan; Pink Flamingos; Hunger; Dirty, Pretty Things
Class Format:
20% Lecture
50% Film/Video
30% Discussion Most films will be screened in class; others will be made available through Moodle. Students can expect to learn how intersectional feminist critique is a way of viewing film critically.

Other Workload: Course requirements include keeping a film journal, a take-home midterm essay exam, and a creative final project.

Class Description:
Guided by feminist theory, this course will provide a critical and analytical investigation of media representations of women and feminist issues. We will watch diverse media including a Hollywood "Blockbuster" movie, independent film, documentary film, and various forms of television over the course of the semester. We will consider how media representations construct notions of identity, namely those related to gender and race, considering the social functions of such portrayals. Students will learn to analyze media representations of myriad feminist issues including: the male gaze, concepts of difference, intersectionality, matters of the body, radicalism, and essentialism. Through screenings and course readings we will trace key concepts and debates in feminist film theory, criticism, and history considering critical reception, historical context, and sociopolitical implications of representation. Through discussions and writing we aim to discern the relevant social, political, ideological, and aesthetic differences of the media we examine. Goals of this course include understanding how and why many women and film-makers/watchers seek to create alternative spaces and visions of women and feminist subjects in film.
