This seminar is designed primarily for first-time graduate TAs who will be teaching in the modern language departments. The course, which is conducted in English, draws on research, examples, and case studies relevant to classroom teaching in the second language areas of participants. Its goal is to equip new instructors with practical and theoretical knowledge about language teaching. Instructors are encouraged to develop self-reflexive practices and to create teaching materials. Discussions cover such topics as the following: theories of language acquisition, the role of contextualization, approaches to help learners develop language proficiency (in reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills), cultural competence, technology resources, assessment practices, educational outcomes, and current discussions in the U.S. and internationally about the importance of second language education.
