Homework assignments become the basis for student-to-student interaction, small group work and role-play in class. The text for the course, Wende, covers speaking and writing in daily contemporary issues and stresses reading and listening strategies useful in language learning. Along with this textbook we use a German cultural reader called Grenzverkehr and grammar reference materials. By the end of the course students should be able to compare the German and American educational systems, and describe free-time activities and career choices. They will also have become familiar with various contemporary social issues in the German-speaking countries. Several class sessions will help familiarize students with computer and Internet resources. This course includes process writing assignments. First-year language courses involve extensive student interaction, partner activities, and group work. Expect an average of 1.5 hours of outside preparation time for each class session hour.
