- We think in stories, and we dream in stories. We fall in love by telling stories about our beloved, and sometimes we fall in love with the stories we tell. This course will give students the tools to think critically about how we put stories together, from the carefully crafted short story to the can-you-believe-it yarn we tell our roommates over dinner. How do the decisions we make about where to begin a story affect how we are able to end it? How does the style in which we write a story change our understanding of the characters in it? Students will look at a variety of stories, from the short fiction of Karen Russell, Stephen King, Ursula Le Guin, and Junot Diaz, to TV shows like Louie, Freaks and Geeks, and Girls, and will talk about what makes the best stories tick. Students will apply these discoveries to their own writing to see what decisions they are making, consciously and unconsciously, as they bring their own characters and settings to life. Experienced writers welcome, beginners welcome. Intro to Fiction is open to anyone who appreciates a good story! This course is a necessary gateway to upper-level fiction writing courses.
