Contemporary political speech. Ideologies in political persuasion. prereq: 1101, 3431 or instr consent
Class Description:
Political Persuasion studies the influence exerted through political language, ideology, the calendar of politics (primary campaigns, nominations, conventions, electoral campaigns, stages in the presidency), relations between the three branches of government. This is a course in political language, the analysis of political speeches and events, and an effort to teach ways to evaluate different kinds of public discourse and the ways in which public discourse creates communities and political identities and influences public culture. The primary goal is to help students understand the broad rhetorical processes by which words, phrases, images, and actions acquire political meaning. These processes includes public addresses, advertisements, constant news cycles, public relations professionals, and other agents. Second, we shall pay particular attention to the rhetorical, argumentative, and institutional advantages afforded presidents, would-be presidents, and elected officials in these social processes. Their efforts, which remain influential rhetorical precedents, compose most of the course packet.
