- Class Description:
The purpose of this class is to offer a survey of approaches to ethical communication that aim to raise consciousness, to offer data and arguments as criteria for judgment, and to stimulate critical thinking about ethical problems in communication within interpersonal, organizational, media, and rhetorical communication. Students will also learn how to apply concepts/theories from philosophy and social science to ethical issues in interpersonal, group, organizational, intercultural, rhetorical, and media communication to thoughtfully assess communication behaviors at a variety of levels. Major assignments include presentations, critical essay writing, and discussion-based learning activities. In order to achieve these objectives, students are exposed to materials grouped as follows: (1) 20th Century Communication Ethics (2) Voting (3) Speech (4) Groupishness (5) Capital.
