- Class Description:
- This course will introduce the development of Christianity within its ancient political, social, religious and cultural contexts. We will focus on the first stories about Jesus as found in the canonical New Testament gospels as the first moments of forming a distinct "Christian" identity. If time allows, we will venture into the second century to trace how these stories play out in the development of early Christianity. We will do our best to stick to the ancient cultural moment when Christianity was born. This moment forms the foundation of subsequent forms of Christianity, including forms that exist today, but we will learn that the foundation is not the same as the final product.
- Who Should Take This Class?:
- Anyone with an interest in the New Testament stories about Jesus, in what ancient people thought about him, and in ancient Judaism and religion.
- Grading:
- Midterm and final exams and two 5-page papers for 3072 (two 10-page papers or one longer paper for 5072).
- Exam Format:
- Essay exams.

- Interactive lecture and small group exercises.
- Workload:
- Reading focuses on close readings of the New Testament gospels. Some additional reading (approx. 30-50 pages per week) to supplement the reading of the ancient texts.

- This course will introduce the basics of reading the New Testament and contextualizing these writings within their ancient political, social, religious and cultural contexts. We will attend to the details of the genre, literary features (language, imagery, metaphors, plot, setting, characterization and rhetoric), and religious dimensions of these texts in order to appreciate the varied perspectives within the collection of documents that make up the New Testament. We will also introduce various modern critical methods of biblical interpretation. Taught by Prof. Stephen Ahearne-Kroll
