Course Catalog Description:
Introduction to stories/study of Greek/Roman mythology.
Class Description:
The gods and heroes of Greek and Roman mythology have appeared in our art, literature, and popular culture for centuries. Mythology, however, is more than just a collection of stories. The myths of the Greeks and Romans, like those of any culture, reflect the hopes, concerns, fears, and history of the societies that produced them. In this course we shall examine the major Greek and Roman myths, looking not only at the stories and characters themselves but also at how they reflect differing conceptions of the world. * * * This course is organized around the major literary sources for the myths of Greece and Rome: archaic Greek epic, classical Greek tragedy, and Roman poetry. We will also look at visual presentations of the myths, both ancient and later, to see how the stories were represented in other media and to talk about the changes these media require or encourage; this will include at least one viewing of a televised version of a myth. * * * This course fulfills the Liberal Education requirement of ?Arts/Humanities.? To this end, students will read ancient texts, look at ancient and later works of art, and try to understand the relationship between the classical myths, the literary and artistic traditions of Greece and Rome, and other aspects of the Greek and Roman cultures (e.g., religion, social structure, sexuality, politics). We will also focus on understanding how and why different artists can change and adapt myths.
