The hope is that this will inspire students to further explore contemporary Chinese culture and society. In this course we will study Chinese writings of different styles in contemporary China, including short stories and essays written since 1949 to the present. These writings reflect Chinese society since the early 1950s. The course will also expose students to newly emerged Internet writing. The lectures and discussions will focus on the use of the language, the contents of the writings, and their reflection of contemporary Chinese society. At the same time, we will also try to explore the Chinese cultural and philosophical meanings found in those works. The course will be taught in Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin).
