Learning Objectives:
In class students will practice problem-solving approaches in thinking. They will be asked to analyze the ways the assigned readings do or do not take this approach in discussing issues around gender and sexuality. Students will be given examples of problem-solving approaches to writing, and asked to take this approach in writing an expository essay on a topic of their choice, relevant to the course material.
Students will be asked to write a final research paper on a topic of their choice appropriate to the course. They will be expected to incorporate the major themes and questions raised by the authors of the assigned texts, to have done library research and to demonstrate their mastery of the material, including but not limited to: identifying, analyzing and applying the methods and theories of Chicana/o scholars writing on gender and sexuality; using the information theyve learned to address an existing social problem; practicing an interdisciplinary approach by using resources from a variety of fields to address an original question, make a unique argument, or to extend the existing knowledge on the topic.

Students will read the foundational texts in Chicana/o Studies on the topic of Gender and Sexuality. They will learn to think about the way in which these categories are socially constructed with variations occurring across and within cultures as well as among diverse subject positions, across historical time periods, geographical locations and economic strata. They will be encouraged to explore their own social locations in comparison to those of the assigned authors and to think about the meaning of our different relationships to power and how these differences can shape gender performance, sexual behavior and identities, desires, role expectations, and sexual subjectivities as well as our political identities or advocacy behaviors. Throughout the semester, they will write reflection papers and/or expository essays that demonstrate the level at which they are thinking through the diverse perspectives and ideas presented by the readings, discussions and lectures.
Grading:
Student Option
Exam Format:
Daily assessments of students participation in discussion and evaluation of their contributions will be taking place throughout the semester by the instructor. Instructor will grade the essay for the students abilities to identify, define and suggest solutions to a social problem around the intersecting and overlapping categories of race, ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality

The instructor will evaluate and grade the paper using a rubric designed to assess the students success in demonstrating their mastery of the scholarship in the area and to use these methods and theories to critically think about some aspect of the way in which race and ethnicity are encoded in gender and sexuality and vice versa.

Papers will be evaluated by the instructor and through peer review assessing the students abilities to analyze, interpret and critically think about the material as well as their ability to demonstrate what they have learned about the diverse perspectives and cultures that have been presented to them.
