- Class Notes:
- In this course, we will be reading unabridged Arabic short stories and novels that centrally feature the relationships between humans, non-human animals, and the environment. We will explore how Arab authors: 1. narrate not just our human impact on, but our kinship with other species. 2. question speciesism and anthropocentrism. 3. chart our past, present, and future as actors upon, and abusers of, the ecosystems of which we form part. 4. imagine not just the most destructive and cruel acts of the human animal, but also our most nurturing potential -- as respectful companion and land protector. While we will primarily focus on modern Arabic fiction, we will draw connections to the ways in which these relationships have been imagined in the classical Arabic literary tradition. Through your readings, discussions, writing, and research assignments in Arabic, we will work on elevating your Arabic language skills toward the Superior level of proficiency. Our readings will be supplemented by viewings of a small number of Arabic films.
