Class Description:
Introduction to the physics and biology of spoken language; the talker's production of sounds and words; transmission of sound; the listener's perception of what was heard; and computer analysis and synthesis of speech. Lectures will be supported by computer animations that show, in slow motion, rapidly changing dynamic events in acoustics, by on-line computer analysis of speech, and by laboratory sessions. Objectives: 1) Provide students who have a limited physics and biology background with an introduction to the physics and biology of spoken language, a field that is not only interesting, but of considerable social importance because of the dominant role that speech, language, and hearing play in society; and 2) Introduce students to recent technological advances associated with spoken language such as digital signal processing systems and speech recognition techniques. The trek through history will begin with Kratzenstein, who designed the first speech synthesizer in 1179, and end with an examination of the ways in which current research from disciplines such as physics, biology, psychology, linguistics, speech and hearing science, and so forth contributes to our understanding of the physics and biology of spoken language.

Class Description:
Human communication is a complex interpersonal process that involves speech, language, and hearing. These three aspects of communication are made up of neurological, cognitive, sensory, anatomical, and physiological components, which come together and develop within social contexts. Functional communication skills are necessary to successfully participate in all aspects of society and any breakdown in speech, language or hearing will have an impact on one's daily life-at home, school, work, and/or community settings. In order to determine if a communication disorder exists, we need to have a clear understanding of what constitutes "normal" communication. The definition of what is normal or acceptable speech, language, and hearing behavior may vary according to age, gender, language or dialectal background, and culture. Thus, these factors must be considered when identifying and treating communication disorders. This course will survey a range of communication disorders affecting children and adults, and will explore the origin, assessment, and treatment of these disorders within the context of normal human variation. Reference to the professional fields of speech-language pathology and audiology will be given throughout the semester.

This seminar is about how communication disorders are perceived and studied in the 21st century and the lived experiences of individuals with communication disorders. Topic for each week will focus on a communication disorder and trace the evolving status of communication disorders within the field of Disability Studies. Concepts including medical vs. social models, access and barriers, neurodiversity, and intersectionality, will be discussed. Each flipped class will involve reading assigned articles on each week's topic and viewing a video lecture before attending each lecture. A discussion format for lectures in class will focus on specific excerpts from the readings. Students will maintain active presence on Canvas by contributing to discussion posts. This course aims to introduce 21st century concepts in Disability Studies and communication disorders. The course topics include- · Representation of communication disorders in the field of Disability Studies, data trends, and barriers to representation. · Frameworks to represent communication disorders and how these have evolved to present day thinking (medical vs. social models and individual differences). · Communication Disorders within the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICFDH) framework. · Barriers to access for specific communication disorders (Autism, Aphasia, Dyslexia, Hearing impairment, Stuttering). · Disability policies that enable equitable distribution of resources at the local and global levels. · Stakeholders and policy mechanisms at the state, central, and international levels.

Class Description:
As humans, our ability to communicate sets us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom. We have precise control over our vocal tract and articulators, allowing us to produce a wide range of distinct sounds. We combine sounds into words, and words into sentences, sending complicated acoustic signals to our communication partners, who translate them back into sounds, words, meaning. We string together a finite number of words into infinite, unique combinations, producing sentences that sometimes have never been uttered before. We use language to symbolically refer to people, places, and things that are not in our immediate environment, allowing our listener to travel back in time with us to a first love, an old failure, a hilarious misstep. We are able to convey information about our own mental state to our communication partner, letting another mind briefly get a glimpse of our own, and we can flexibly adapt how we communicate this information based on what we know about our partner and our shared history. Underlying these rich, adaptive behaviors are our human brains. This course provides an introduction to how our brains support speech, language, and hearing, and will serve as a foundation for further graduate study.

Class Notes:
Find out more at http://classinfo.umn.edu/
Class Description:
The first few weeks of this course will build upon the knowledge acquired in your introductory course in Audiology. You will be expected to know fine details about test procedures and test interpretation, including understanding the content of journal articles from your readings that address these issues. An important part of the transition from undergraduate to graduate study is to know how to support your clinical decisions and the procedures you select with journal citations. Audiologic Assessment II, the second course in the sequence, will introduce material that is not presented in any detail in most undergraduate curricula if it is presented at all. This course will emphasize physiological measures, such as ABR and otoacoustic emissions. Laboratory exercises are designed to complement the lectures in these areas. By the end of this two-course sequence, you will have a strong foundation in auditory diagnosis using both behavioral and physiological measures. The laboratory exercises and practical exams are designed to provide you with the skills to enter a practicum in a medical setting with adults. Audiologic Assessment III, a course that emphasizes balance function, will complete the series. After successful completion of this course you will be able to: 1) perform independently a basic audiologic assessment on an adult client. This includes case history, otoscopy, tuning fork tests, pure tone audiometry, masking, word recognition performance for monosyllabic words, and the aural acoustic immittance battery. 2) Determine the need for selecting an assessment tool from the basic battery of tests listed above 3) Know how to interpret the results for the basic battery of audiometric tests for persons with normal hearing and impaired hearing 4) Know the effectiveness and precision of various tests in the basic battery based on results from scientific studies published in peer-reviewed journals
