- Class Description:
- OLPD 8502 is an advanced seminar course designed to teach critical thinking skills with regard to evaluation theory and methods. The course text is a set of key articles by major figures in the field of evaluation. The course begins with an examination of a basic problem facing evaluators - the difficulty of conducting valid evaluations of complex social and educational programs and policies. Each evaluation approach is then examined as a response to this problem of complexity. By the end of the semester, students will understand, appreciate and be able to critically discuss major theories and models of evaluation. Understanding will be assessed through three written assignments and participation in online forum discussions. The written assignments will involve the development of evaluation plans for a program of your choice, using a sequential confirmatory evaluation approach (qualitative design followed by a quantitative design), a sequential explanatory evaluation approach (quantitative design followed by a qualitative design), an integrated mixed-method evaluation approach (parallel, nested, or iterative qualitative and quantitative designs), a theory-of-action approach, a utilization-focused evaluation approach, a participatory evaluation approach, or some combination of these approaches.
