Do you want to make a difference? We live in a world full of complex challenges, such as COVID-19, racism, economic recession, and environmental collapse, to name a few. Now is the time to use your own skills and passion to make a positive impact in the world. In this project-based course, you will learn how to develop effective and sustainable responses to current social and environmental problems. You'll study a variety of tools, mindsets, and skills that will help you to address any complex grand challenge, as well as engage with case studies of successful grand challenge projects in the past. Your project may address food insecurity, unemployment, housing, environmental impacts, equity, or other issues. Proposed designs for how you might have an impact may take many forms (student group, program intervention with an existing organization, public policy strategy, or for-profit or non-profit venture) but this class will focus on how to make ideas financially sustainable. The primary focus of this (GCC 5005) course is how to develop a pilot project plan that addresses a grand challenge. You will learn business modeling, financial projections, and pitching to potential investors and funders. You will build a model for your idea around input from primary and secondary research, as well as the affected community's culture, needs, and wants. Community members, locally and globally, may serve as mentors and research consultants to teams. External speakers will be brought in to share their stories of how to build and scale innovative efforts to serve the common good. Are you seeking ways to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impact in meaningful ways? You will work in interdisciplinary teams in this interactive, online project-based course to develop entrepreneurial responses to COVID-19 pandemic related social, economic, and environmental problems while developing the tools, mindsets, and skills that can help you be a leader in addressing complex grand challenges. Projects will focus on the disruptions caused by the pandemic including food insecurity, unemployment, housing, transportation, small business, and workplace closures. Emerging central concerns at this time of equity issues, environmental, and other impacts will be emphasized in the course. Mentors and research consultants including community members and invited speakers will share their entrepreneurial, innovative work and insights. Teams will develop a well-designed venture plan and be prepared to compete for venture funding through Acara (acara.umn.edu) if you are interested in piloting your idea. Addressing many of the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges requires not only an idea, but a plan to establish a scalable solution. In this project-based course, multidisciplinary teams design venture solutions to global grand challenges related to environment, health and development. For example, teams may address a challenge related to water supply, energy availability, food/agriculture production, waste management, or public health. This fall, teams will identify a specific challenge in Puerto Rico, India and Greater Minnesota; design a product or service; and create a financially viable and impactful business solution. Professionals and experts based here and in their various locations will mentor each team.
