Class Description:
This class will explore ?water? by focusing on the Great Lakes, using a liberal arts approach to emphasize the interdisciplinary aspects of water in nature and society. Students will learn about the chemical, ecological, and geological aspects and challenges of the Great Lakes, in addition to their rich history, their economic drivers, their music, art and cultural contributions, and the laws and policies that that govern them and that have shaped national and international policy. In addition, students will benefit from a mentored research experience that allows them to explore one of these areas in more depth. Dr. Deborah L. Swackhamer is a Professor of Science, Technology, and Public Policy in the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and Co-Director of the University's Water Resources Center. She also is a Professor of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health. She studies the processes affecting the behavior of, and exposures to, toxic chemicals in the environment and works on policies to address these potential risks. Dr. Swackhamer has served as Chair of the Science Advisory Board of the US Environmental Protection Agency, and currently is a member of the Science Advisory Board of the International Joint Commission of the US and Canada. She is also a Governor appointee on the Minnesota Clean Water Council. She was President of the National Institutes of Water Resources in 2011-2012. Dr. Swackhamer is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the journal Environmental Science & Technology. She is a Fellow in the Royal Society of Chemistry in the UK. Dr. Swackhamer received the 2007 Harvey G. Rogers Award from the Minnesota Public Health Association. In 2009 she received the prestigious Founders Award from the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry for lifetime achievement in environmental sciences. She was the 2010 recipient of the University of Minnesota's Ada Comstock Award. Dr. Philippon studies American environmental literature and its relationship to the ideas of nature, culture, and place. He seeks to understand the rhetorical strategies and practical effects of literary texts and their creators, particularly with regard to the historical roots of our contemporary environmental values. Dr. Philippon's scholarship is grounded most firmly in the area of literary criticism known as "ecocriticism," but it is also strongly influenced by current work in environmental history, environmental ethics, and conservation biology. He teaches a range of courses that concern the environmental humanities, literary nonfiction writing, and sustainability studies, and I am a past president of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE). He is currently serving as Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of English and working on a project examining the discourses of the sustainable food movement.
