- Faculty members lead students in discussions on topics of interest, held at the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories.
- Class Notes:
- This 1-credit class is held at the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories field station, 8am - 12pm Monday through Friday for two weeks in the summer term. Students will develop oral presentation and communication skills to support both the dissemination of research findings and interaction among the public and other members of the science community. Topics will include audience analysis and engagement, narrative structure, writing for the spoken word, speaking anxiety causes and mitigation, vocal production, physical presence, and the skills and methods of effective practice. The class will be a combination of lecture and practicum, during which students will give presentations. This course is taught at the UMN Itasca Biological Station and Labs (IBSL), located 220 miles northwest of the Twin Cities campus. Students are required to attend a mandatory orientation on Sunday, June 4, 2023, at IBSL and to pay $541 for housing and meals onsite 6/4/2023 - 6/17/2023. For each field course there also is a $50 transportation fee. Scholarships are available at https://cbs.umn.edu/itasca/field-biology-courses to defer costs of room, board, and tuition.
